Portfolio as a tool for assessing the achievements of a resident

Modern medical education emphasizes assessment as a tool for quality assurance within curricula, a tool for motivating students and monitoring the learning process. Portfolio assessment of resident physicians illustrates the achievement on certain indicators that he was able to achieve in accordance with the required standards. The Department of Internal Diseases and Rheumatology evaluates the portfolio of resident doctors in the specialties “Adult and Pediatric Gastroenterology”, “Adult and Pediatric Rheumatology”, “Adult and Pediatric Nephrology”. Portfolio assessment focuses on whether the student has demonstrated learning outcomes in the portfolio. Independent work of residents, namely the curation of patients in the clinic, allows you to assess the level of knowledge and skills in the chosen specialty. One of the convenient options for monitoring and evaluating the clinical work of residents, as a representative of the electronic portfolio, is the MedLog Program, which allows the resident to conveniently keep a record of clinical cases in which he directly took an active part: he performed conservative or surgical treatment, performed diagnostic manipulations. The program also helps the academic mentor of the resident at any time to evaluate the performance of his ward, and to record, analyze, monitor the fulfillment of the clinical workload of the resident of NСJSC “SMU” and master practical skills. The reliability of using the portfolio is also associated with the ability to conduct feedback, use the 360-degree questionnaire, which allows assessing the competencies of the resident. In the portfolio, the student needs to gather enough diverse information into one whole to illustrate the dynamics of his achievements and to conduct a self-assessment of personal development and education. Monitoring the assessment of the portfolio of resident graduates showed a dynamic increase in the competencies of professional, scientific achievements with the publication of materials, the skills of critical analysis of literature, the development of additional educational programs, participation in the educational and methodological work of the department in the training project from “resident to student” and social – volunteer activities.
