Role of clinical mentors in the residency of the speciality “Pediatric surgery”

At the Department of Traumatology and Pediatric Surgery, 14 residents are studying in the specialty “Pediatric Surgery”, of which 8 are residents of the first year of study; 5 residents of the 2nd year of study and 1 resident of the 3rd year of study.

Clinical mentors of pediatric surgeon residents are pediatric surgeons of the highest qualification category: at the clinical base of the State Medical University NCJSC “MUS” in Semey – candidate of medical sciences, assistant of the department Aubakirov Maratbek Tokanovich and assistant of the department Zharkimbaeva Almira Dalelevna; at the clinical base in the regional children’s hospital in Pavlodar – head of the surgical department of the Children’s Hospital Erlan Amangeldinovich Ramazanov; at the clinical base of the “Mother and Child Center” in Ust-Kamenogorsk – the head of the pediatric surgical department is Rakhimzhanov Kairat Kusmanovich.

Residents, under the guidance of clinical mentors, receive planned and emergency patients, under the supervision of clinical mentors, assist and perform independent abdominal, urological operations, repositions and other operations on the musculoskeletal system, work in treatment rooms, participate in presentations at morning medical conferences, on general rounds of the head of the surgical department, work with medical documentation in the “Integrated Medical Information System”, and conduct weekly duty in the department.

Also, residents of the 2nd and 3rd years of study, under the guidance of clinical mentors, take an active part in the treatment of severe patients with diagnoses such as destructive appendicitis complicated by peritonitis; bacterial destruction of the lungs; pneumothorax; traumatic urethral rupture; abdominal injuries; open and closed fractures.

Residents of the first year of training adopt the experience of residents of senior years of training and clinical mentors.

The role of a clinical mentor in pediatric surgery is an integral means of transferring knowledge and skills from a more experienced specialist to a less experienced one, and from an older generation to a younger one. Effective clinical mentoring and the use of experience to prepare a mobile, competitive, highly qualified doctor is the key to success in the future clinical work of a pediatric surgeon.[/vc_column_text]
