As part of the planned events, an intra-university Olympiad was held among students of NCJSC “SMU” on February 16, 2024 among surgical residents, organized by employees of the school of postgraduate education, employment and careers of graduates under the leadership of Dean Musabekova Zh.A., teaching staff of the Department of Hospital Surgery, anesthesiology and resuscitation under the leadership of the head of the department Aimagambetov M.Zh. Invited independent experts: Chairman of the Board – Rector Dyusupov A.A.; Vice-Rector for Clinical and Postgraduate Education Berikuly D.; Dean of the School of Postgraduate Education, Employment and Career of Graduates Musabekova Zh.A.; Deputy Dean for Residency of the School of Postgraduate Education, Employment and Career of Graduates Orazbayeva A.K.; Head of the Department of Simulation and Educational Technologies, Ph.D. Mukanova D.A.; independent experts – representatives from therapeutic residents: Maidan Doszhan Muratuly – 2nd year resident of the specialty “Adult, Pediatric Cardiology” Muzdubaev Daulet Kairatovich – 2nd year resident of the specialty “Adult, Pediatric Gastroenterology”.
At the opening ceremony of the Olympiad, congratulatory speeches were made by: Chairman of the Board – Rector A. A. Dyusupov; Vice-Rector for Clinical and Postgraduate Education Berikuly D.; Head of the Department of Hospital Surgery, Anesthesiology and Reanimatology Aimagambetov M.Zh.
The purpose of the Olympiad was to assess the level of theoretical knowledge and mastery of basic practical skills required for surgical residents, as well as to provide incentive and motivation for further improvement of professional knowledge and practical skills of students.
The participants of the Olympiad were: residents of surgical specialties of 1, 2, 3, 4 years of study. The winners of the intra-departmental selection by year of study were presented from each surgical specialty. A total of 28 residents took part.
The Olympics took place in two stages. At the first stage, participants took a test exam on the Capes platform at the University CIT. A total of 40 test items on emergency surgery were included. The second stage of the competition was held at the Department of Simulation and Educational Technologies. At this stage, the level of skill proficiency was assessed at 6 stations: knowledge of surgical instruments, tying surgical knots, applying surgical sutures, vascular suture, conicotomy, endovideosurgery skills, tracheal intubation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Based on the results of the two stages of the Olympiad, the jury summed up the results by calculating the total score of each resident to determine the winners of the Olympiad by year of study.
To ensure transparency of the evaluation at each stage, independent jury members were involved: teaching staff and residents of therapeutic departments. Based on the results of two stages among residents of the first year of training, 1st place was taken by Kerimtayeva Nazerke Erikkyzy (pediatric surgery, 101 group), 2nd place by Baltek Ali Sakenuly (general surgery, 101 group), 3rd place by Dilyara Kuanyshevna Baymurunova (otorhinolaryngology, adult and children’s, 101 group). Among the residents of the second year of study, 1st place was awarded to Nurgazinov Eldos Timurovich (general surgery, group 201), 2nd place to Oshakbai Bekzat Sapargaliuly (traumatology and orthopedics for adults and children, 201 group), 3rd place to Gafurov Rail Erkinuly (angiosurgery for adults and children, 201 group). In the third year of study, 1st place was awarded to Alisher Kanatbekuly Orintai (pediatric surgery, group 301), 2nd place to Alisher Bolatuly (adult and pediatric traumatology and orthopedics, group 301), 3rd place to Begeldinov Sayan Bekezhanuly (general surgery, group 301). The winners demonstrated a high level of theoretical knowledge and mastery of practical skills.
The winners of the Olympiad were awarded diplomas of 1st, 2nd, 3rd degrees. The management of the university provides the nominees for the Olympiad with foreign internships in leading clinics near and far abroad, followed by employment in clinical departments of Semey Medical University.
