The Abai State Kazakh Musical Drama Theater is the very first cultural center of art among all Kazakh theaters. The proof of this is the beginning of a new art of the Kazakh people — the premiere of the play “Enlik — Kebek”, staged in 1917 under the direction of Mukhtar Auezov at the jailau “Oykudyk”. This is a historically proven and timely confirmed event.

In 1934, the theater was officially opened with the play “Revenge” by Ilyas Zhansugurov. The theater staged works by M. Auezov, G. Musrepov, B. Mailin, G. Mustafin, R. Gamzatov, Sh. Aitmatov. The golden fund of the theater’s repertoire included the plays “Enlik — Kebek”, “Karakoz”, “Kozy-Korpesh — Bayan-sulu”, “Ayman — Sholpan”, “Under the Wolf Hat”. The theater has a siphon orchestra and a ballet group.
