The Regional Universal Library named after Abai is the oldest library in Kazakhstan, located in Semey. The Semipalatinsk Library was opened on September 20, 1883 at the regional statistical committee. Until 1992 — Semipalatinsk Regional Universal Scientific Library named after N. V. Gogol. It was one of the first cultural institutions in the city. The library’s collection includes more than 348 thousand copies. The rare collection is more than 5 thousand copies. The pearl of the library’s rare collection is Homer’s poetic creation “Iliad”, published in 1829, translated by the poet N. Gnedich.
