Interprofessional peer training in the Department of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology

On May 24, 2024, at the Department of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology, an open lesson on the “InterProfessional Peer Training” (IPPT, interprofessional peer training) technology was held in a hybrid format on the topic: “Extraintestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) – articular syndrome, differentiated approach.” The lesson was prepared with the participation of residents of the educational programs “Gastroenterology for adults, children”, “Rheumatology for adults, children”, as well as interns of group 617, who were trained at our department in accordance with the schedule. A representative from the Quality Control Department of Medical Education of our university was present at the event.

The preparatory stage in the IPFT format included the study by residents of a real clinical case based on the management of a patient in the inpatient department of the Department of Gastroenterology of the University Hospital of Semey Medical University, NCJSC, analysis of medical documentation of the anamnesis, and study of literature data on the stated topic.

5 reports were heard on extraintestinal manifestations of IBD, features of diagnosis and treatment of this pathology in a particular patient, as well as a review of the literature in general.

Under the leadership of Kaskabaeva A.Sh., head of the department of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology of Semey Medical University, NCJSC, and associate professor T.E. Shakhanov. (academic mentor of gastroenterology residents) the following presentations were prepared for discussion:

  1. Clinical case of a patient to be discussed (speaker: resident-gastroenterologist 1-year Togaybekova M.);
  2. Extraintestinal manifestations of IBD (speaker: intern 617 group Bakhtarov A.);
  3. Differentiated therapy of IBD from the perspective of evidence-based medicine (speaker: resident-gastroenterologist 1-year Zhanaeva A.)

Issues of risk factors and etiopathogenesis of articular syndrome in seronegative spondyloarthritis, differential diagnosis, tactics of managing patients with articular syndrome in IBD were prepared and covered by rheumatology residents for 2 years (under the guidance of c.m.s., Acting professor of the Department of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology Goremykina M.V.) in the following reports:

  1. Focus on articular syndrome in IBD (speaker: resident-rheumatologist 2-year Eshmukhamet M.);
  2. Pathogenetic aspects of the combination of IBD and articular syndrome – treatment tactics (speaker: resident-rheumatologist 2-year Akhmetolla D.)

After each report, all participants of the event actively discussed issues of practical importance. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations were given for further management of the patient, taking into account the opinion of current specialists in the field of gastroenterology and rheumatology represented by academic and clinical mentors of the department.

Positive feedback was received from students.

The use of the method of interprofessional mutual training contributes to the formation and strengthening of clinical, communication competencies, team interaction skills, and a deeper study of the topic.
