Current Issues in Addictive Medicine. Gambling Addiction

On September 16, 2024, a class hour was held in curator groups 1133 of the Faculty of Medicine and 1306 of the Faculty of Dentistry on the topic: “Current Issues in Addictive Medicine. Gambling Addiction.”

The curator explained that gambling addiction (or ludomania) is a pathological dependence on gambling. This condition is characterized by an uncontrollable urge to participate in gambling despite negative consequences such as financial problems, social isolation, and emotional distress. Gambling addiction manifests as an inability to stop playing, even in the face of serious negative consequences, including financial difficulties and the breakdown of social relationships. It was also emphasized that gambling addiction is a form of addictive behavior that requires professional medical and psychological assistance.

The students discussed the issue of gambling addiction as one of the forms of addictive behavior. During the discussion, they considered how gambling can negatively affect a person’s life, leading to serious financial and social consequences, and discussed measures for preventing and treating this addiction. Special attention was paid to the role of medical professionals in diagnosing and helping people suffering from gambling addiction.
