As part of the event held by the team of the Department of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology of the SMU dedicated to Teacher’s Day, a career guidance meeting of interns with the faculty of three specialties and residents was held on October 2, 2024.
The head of the department, Dr. Kaskabayeva made a welcoming speech. She told about the history and traditions of the department; about the people who stood at its origins, Dr. Kaskabayeva demonstrated the achievements of each teacher of the Department of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. The activities of the department occupy a special place in providing knowledge to students in gastroenterology, nephrology and rheumatology, and training versatile specialists.
So, “Rheumatology” is a field of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of joint diseases, systemic diseases of connective tissue. To assist interns in making an informed choice of their future residency specialty, Honored Professor Dr. Ivanova spoke out, emphasizing that rheumatology is rightfully considered one of the most important specialties that have had a significant impact on the development of medicine in general and especially during the coronavirus pandemic. The profession of a rheumatologist is in demand at present, as rheumatic diseases have become more common in society. In recent years, rheumatology has achieved tremendous success throughout the world, including in Kazakhstan. In 2024, Rheumatology centers with modern equipment and facilities were opened in several cities of Kazakhstan, and it is planned to create a Scientific Center for Rheumatology in Almaty. The full range of modern drugs is used in the treatment of patients with rheumatic diseases, including therapy with genetically engineered biological drugs. Symposia and international scientific and practical conferences are held annually, in which rheumatology residents also take an active part. Graduates of the residency in the specialty “Adult and Pediatric Rheumatology” successfully work in various medical institutions and universities not only in Kazakhstan, but also in neighboring countries. The information provided showed interns the possibilities of further education and career growth in the event of their choice of the residency specialty “Adult and Pediatric Rheumatology”.
