The Department of Clinical Oncology, Radiology, and Nuclear Medicine named after Professor D.R. Musinov conducts educational, scientific, and clinical activities, combining a rich history with modern practice. The history of the oncology department begins in 1975, when an oncology course at the Semipalatinsk Medical Institute was organized on the basis of the Semipalatinsk Regional Oncology Dispensary.
The first head of the course was Vitaly P.R.,, Associate Professor. In 1983, the Department of Oncology was established. Professor A.T. Butenko, MD, became the first head of the department. From 1985 to 1993, the department was then headed by Professor V.G. Cherenkov, MD.

From 1994 to 1999, the department was headed by Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor A. Zh. Mukanov, and from 1999 to 2006 by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor D. R. Musinov.
From 2006 to 2008, the department was headed by Candidate of Medical Sciences R. Ts. Zhakupova, and from 2008 to 2013 by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Z. A. Manambaeva. From 2013 to 2021, the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor T. A. Adylkhanov, and from 2021 to 2024 by PhD, Associate Professor L. A. Pak.
From 2024 to the present, the head of the department is PhD Doctor, Associate Professor B.A. Apsalikov.

By decision of the Board of Directors on May 8, 2025, the Department of Oncology and Nuclear Medicine was merged with the Department of Radiology.
The history of the Department of Radiology at the Semipalatinsk Medical Institute spans over 70 years: it was founded in 1954, with I.I. Pilger serving as its first head. In subsequent years, the department was headed by Professors M.T. Aliyakparov and O.M. Kim, Associate Professors N.F. Andryashchenko, A.A. Schneider, A.K. Akhmetbaeva, and others. In 2018, the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine was established. Since 2021, the department has been renamed the Department of Radiology. At present, the faculty includes Professor Madieva M.R., Associate Professor Raisov D.T., Acting Associate Professor Abiltaeva A.A., Head of the Oncology Department Kosymbaeva E.O., Head of the Radiology Department Mukanova A.K., Assistants Musulmanova M.A., Rymbaeva A.S., Zhunisova D.A., Salykbaeva K.S., Almisaev K.A., Kultumanova N.M., as well as part-time workers Tanatarov S.Z., Pak L.A., Beketova B.B., Nurpeisova K.B., Tusupzhanova A.K., Idrisova A.S.
In order to ensure high-quality training of oncologists and radiologists, the department relies on a broad clinical base, including the Center for Nuclear Medicine and Oncology of the Abay Regional Healthcare Institution, the University Hospital of the NAO “SMU”, the Emergency Hospital, and the Khakim and Nova Diagnostic clinics. The educational process is focused on mastering the issues of early diagnosis of oncological diseases, conducting screening studies, developing a physician’s tactics in case of suspected tumors, as well as studying modern diagnostic and treatment methods. Practical training takes place in outpatient clinics, emergency departments, and hospitals, with direct patient participation.
The department’s staff actively conducts research and clinical work, making a significant contribution to the development of oncology and radiology in the region.
