The Department of Pathological Anatomy was established in 1955, and the Department of Forensic Medicine in 1957 year. The unification of these departments took place in 2008 and nowadays. Saulesh Akhatovna Apbasova, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, and Associate Professor, currently serves as the Head of the Department.
From 1955 to 2008, the Department of Pathological Anatomy worked in various scientific areas under the supervision of heads such as: Professor Dmitry Mikhailovich Taranov, C.M.S. (1955-1965); Associate Professor, C.M.S. Boleslav Fedorovich Frolov (1966-1976); Professor Lev Arkadyevich Cherkassky, D.M.S. (1976-1987); Professor Yuri Vasilyevich Pruglo, D.M.S. (1988 2003); Muslim Muzaffarovich Kaldybaev, C.M.S. (2003-2008); Professor Dariya Muratovna Shabdarbayeva, D.M.S. (2008-2024).
The Department of Forensic Medicine worked under the leadership of Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Sapi Kidraliev (1957-1976); Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Tursun Negmatovich Sailibaev (1976-1995), Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Dariya Muratovna Shabdarbayeva (1996-2008).
Currently, the staff of the department is showing success in various areas of the department’s activities. They successfully completed clinical, scientific, and methodological specializations in the USA, Japan, Israel, Austria and Germany. Practical classes and lectures are conducted using innovative methods. The following international scientific projects are taking place: “Immuno-morphological studies of internal organs under the influence of narcotic substances on the body”, this research won a grant from Nagasaki University (Japan) and “Long-term effects of internal radiation at various levels of the body: a multicenter experimental study using a nuclear reactor” (Japan, Russia). The staff of the department have a regular exchange of experiences with colleagues from near and far abroad within the framework of academic mobility (Ryazan Medical University, Russia; Samarkand Medical University, Uzbekistan, International Kazakh-Turkish University named after H.A.Yassawi, Kazakhstan), clinical work is actively carried out, including complex and commission expertises. The department provides residency training by the specialty “Forensic medical examination». Also, faculty of staff training and retraining of personnel in pathological anatomy takes place. The department was awarded the title of “The Best department” and “The Golden Department of Russia». Over the past 5 years, our department has had the following indicators in the nomination: “The best head of the department of SMU Semey” – D. M. Shabdarbayeva, “The best teacher of SMU Semey” – N. B. Sayakenov, S. A. Apbasova, A. A. Zhakipova, “The best lecturer” – D. M. Shabdarbayeva, S. S. Apbasova. A., “The highest impact factor of the 2016 Web of Science article is 2nd place (D. M.Shabdarbayeva, N. B. Sayakenov), “The top 20 scientists engaged in research activities” and others.
The following disciplines are taught at the department: pathological anatomy, forensic medicine, clinical patho-morphology, and medical law. At the department studying students of the Faculty of General Medicine, Dentistry, Preventive Medicine, Nursing, and residents specializing in rheumatology, oncology, and nephrology. In 2013, were obtained residency licenses in the specialty of forensic medicine and pathological anatomy.
Employees were trained by innovative teaching technologies (abroad-USA, Israel and regionally-at Semey State Medical University). To achieve the final learning outcomes, the department uses the following teaching and learning methods:
– Reading integrated lectures horizontally and vertically, with mandatory electronic feedback at the end of the lecture and after each integration fragment.
– Providing practical lessons in forensic and pathoanatomic morgues with demonstrative autopsies.
– Providing practical lessons with using PBL and CBL methods.
– Conducting practical CBL classes with vertical integration.
– Independent work of students with anatomical and histological preparations.
– Conducting an exam and control works on practical skills in the OCE, OSPE.
– Working in the 3D Pathology program
– Watching video clips
– A terminological dictionary has been created in Kazakh and English.
– The moderation methodology for preparing for the OSPE has been introduced.
– Videos of practical skills in forensic medicine have been created.
– An electronic database of micro-preparations on pathological anatomy has been created.
– Educational and visual aids (atlas) on pathological anatomy 1 and 2 in Russian, Kazakh and English languages have been released.
– A mini-clinical examination in forensic medicine has been introduced for interns of this specialty.
– Situational e-learning tasks have been created.
These measures were carried out to improve academic performance and attendance:
- The introduction of innovative technologies in practical classes using multimedia technology.
- Monthly analysis of students’ academic performance and attendance, connections with dean offices and establishment of risk groups.
- Organizing additional lessons with students who have low academic performance.
- Providing consultations by topics.
- Supervision by the head of the department and a head teacher.
- Communication with deans and supervisors.
- Communication with parents of students who have poor academic results and missing classes.
- Individual interviews with underachieving students.
- Ensuring maximum visibility of classes.
After control works, admission of practical skills, and exams-students make feedback to show the degree of satisfaction with the quality of teaching, mastery of practical skills, quality of lectures, and availability of educational literature. The analysis of the survey shows that the main contingent of students is satisfied with the quality of teaching at the department, i.e. students who have difficulty preparing for classes.
Methodological manuals on pathological anatomy 1 and 2 have been published in Russian, Kazakh and English.
In purposes to train competitive specialists-multimedia technology and visual materials are widely used at all stages of the educational process. The list of medicines used is reflected in the work program and methodological developments. The pedagogical skills of teachers are enhanced by the attendance and active participation of the teaching staff of the department in activities such as seminars, conferences of the university, through mutual attendance of practical classes and lectures, followed by discussion at cathedral meetings, participation in competitions for the best lecturer.
