A traditional peace action was held in Semey in honor of the 33rd anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site.
Activists of the international anti-nuclear movement “Nevada – Semey”, representatives of local executive bodies, public figures and residents of the city laid flowers at the monument “Stronger than Death” and honored the memory of the victims of nuclear tests with a minute of silence.
Let us recall that the Semipalatinsk test site was closed 33 years ago, on August 29, 1991. Thus, Kazakhstan became one of the first countries in the world to renounce nuclear weapons. This year was no exception – a delegation from Japan was met on Beibitshilik Island, as well as the head of the Irish charity fund “A Cause Greater Than Chernobyl” Fiona Corcoran. Our university, including assistants of the Department of Propaedeutics of Children’s Diseases, took an active part in this important event.
