On March 5, 2025, Acting Professor of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Alma Uakhitovna Nurtazina, delivered a presentation on behalf of NJSC “SMU” at the side-event titled “Semipalatinsk Test Site: The Cost of Nuclear Weapons – A Warning to the World”, held within the framework of the Third Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). The event took place under the chairmanship of Kazakhstan at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City (USA) from March 3 to March 7, 2025.
The presentation focused on the medical aspects of the impact of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site on public health. Numerous questions were raised by participants of the event, including journalists, scientists, and representatives of non-governmental organizations.
In total, the Third Meeting of States Parties to the TPNW was attended by more than 85 official delegations from TPNW member and observer states, as well as over a thousand participants including members of parliaments, representatives of international and scientific organizations, global media, and civil society, including communities affected by nuclear testing.
