The 20th of October is World Osteoporosis Day! The World Health Organization established this theme back in 1997, with the goal of achieving global public awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a multidisciplinary disease, as it occurs in patients with diseases, especially in patients with different manifestations and prevalence. Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disorder characterized by low bone mass, micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue leading to bone fragility, and consequent increase in fracture risk. It is the most common reason for a broken bone among the elderly. Bones that commonly break include the vertebrae in the spine, the bones of the forearm, and the hip.

In  the 20th of October, 2022 by the Department of Internal Diseases and Rheumatology  together with residents in the specialty  rheumatology 1-2 years of study  and interns of the GP 623 group held an “Open Day” dedicated to the World Osteoporosis Day for patients of the cardio-rheumatology department of the University Hospital of  NCJSC “SMU”. Residents explained the patients: what is osteoporosis; what risk factors for osteoporosis exist; symptoms characteristic of osteoporosis; possibilities of modern diagnostics and prevention of osteoporosis. In addition, a survey have conducted to identify risk factors for osteoporosis among these patients of the department and feedback have received.

On the basis of the  NCJSC “SMU” University Hospital there is a device for X-ray densitometry, which is the “Gold standard” for diagnosing osteoporosis, as well as an objective method for assessing the effectiveness of the treatment of this disease.
