The role of elective disciplines in the formation of the competencies of a general practitioner

In order to form professional competencies in a GP doctor that meet the requirements of modern society, it is necessary to provide adequate conditions for their formation. One of these conditions is the creation of elective disciplines and the possibility of their choice by the students themselves. Elective disciplines are aimed not only at an in-depth study of educational material in specialized disciplines, but also at intra-profile differentiation and individualization of specialized education. Possessing their own baggage of knowledge, interests, inclinations and cognitive abilities, students should have some degree of freedom in choosing the content of their own education.

We studied feedback from employers and undergraduate students to determine needs for additional competencies. At the department there are elective disciplines in the disciplines of Nephrology, Gastroenterology and Rheumatology, aimed at a more in-depth study of the problems of practical health care. To acquire competencies in the preparation of medical documentation for a patient of a therapeutic profile, as well as skills in working in information systems of medical institutions, a new elective discipline for undergraduate students “Clinical Practice of Medical History in Therapy” is offered. All proposed elective disciplines were presented for undergraduate, internship and residency students.
