Day of the national currency of Kazakhstan

Day of the national currency of Kazakhstan

On 15 November 2023 with the group 1218 of the faculty “General Medicine”, a curatorial hour on the theme of the Day of the national currency – tenge was held.

History of Kazakhstan currency tenge: 29 October 1993 Kazakhstan introduced its own national currency – tenge. In November, President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed a decree to this effect. Three days later, the Kazakh currency became the only legal tender in the country.

The choice of the name of the national currency caused a lot of controversy: there were variants “altyn”, “aksha”, “tanga”. It was planned to call the Kazakh currency “som” – this was the name of the Soviet ruble translated into Kazakh on Soviet banknotes. However, after Kyrgyzstan introduced the Kyrgyz som in 1993, another name was adopted – “tenge”.

The purpose of the curatorial hour was to learn about the history of our currency. In this curatorial hour students understood the value of tenge, its importance, shared ideas about financial literacy.
