A seminar on measles prevention was held at the University Hospital of NAO IUS

In 2023, on November 29, a seminar on measles prevention was held for medical workers at the University Hospital of SMU, NCJCS. The speakers reported that to date more than 17 thousand cases of measles have been registered in Kazakhstan.
Infectious disease specialists noted that the contagiousness index for measles is close to 100% and that this infection is characterized by the following clinical picture: fever (38-39 C°), catarrh of the upper respiratory tract (runny nose, “barking cough”), conjunctivitis, Belsky-Filatov spots -Koplica (small whitish spots surrounded by a red stripe – “semolina”).
With measles, complications such as pneumonia, croup, otitis media, oral ulcers and diarrhea, convulsions, and encephalitis may develop. But the most severe complication that occurs is subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), which occurs in one in 5,000 cases of measles with onset an average of 7 years (range: 1 month to 27 years) after acute measles. At the end of the seminar, the emphasis was placed on vaccination against measles, as the most reliable measure in preventing this infection.
