Seminar for health workers of Abay region “Whooping cough of children”

On February 09, 2024, the head of the Department of Children’s Infectious Diseases of the SMU, chief freelance children’s infectious disease specialist of Abay region, Candidate of Medical Sciences Efendiyev I.M., assistants of the Department of Children’s Infectious Diseases: Candidate of Medical Sciences Mansurova A.A. and Smailov E.S. with the support of the Health Department of Abay region held a seminar for medical workers of health care institutions of Abay region on the topic: “Whooping cough in children”. The workshop was held in an online format (on the Zoom platform).

The seminar moderator Efendiyev I.M. made an introductory speech and emphasized the relevance of the problem of pertussis in children. In 2023, 393 cases of pertussis were registered in Kazakhstan, while in the past there were only three cases. In 90% of cases unvaccinated children fell ill.  The increase in the incidence of pertussis is associated with a decrease in collective immunity due to missed scheduled vaccination and refusals to be vaccinated (https://vlast.kz/novosti/58189-v-kazahstane-rastet-zabolevaemost-koklusem.html). In the Abay region, 8 cases were registered for 2023, and for January 2024 – already 12 cases.

Then the presentation “Etiology, epidemiology, classification, clinical picture, laboratory diagnosis, treatment and prevention of pertussis in children” was given.

Efendiyev I.M. summarized the results of the seminar by answering the questions of the listeners. The participants thanked the organizers for the seminar. A total of 100 listeners participated in the seminar.

Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases expresses gratitude to the staff of the Digital Technology Department of the SMU for technical support of the event.
