In 2024, on March 12, a round table “Viral intestinal infections” was held at the hospital No. 3, the participants of which were GPs and nursing staff. The round table was organized by the head of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Dermatovenereology and Immunology, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor N.K. Shaimardanov. and assistant Smail E.M.
During the round table, the speakers noted that viral intestinal infections are a group of acute infectious diseases with similar manifestations, in which the causative agents are different viruses. Most often, gastrointestinal disorders are observed in diseases caused by rotaviruses. In recent years, due to the improvement in the diagnosis of acute intestinal infections, the etiological role of other types has been confirmed: noro-, astro-, some types of enteroviruses, etc.
The incubation period for intestinal infections of viral etiology ranges from several hours to 7 days, more often 1-3 days. The clinical manifestations of viral intestinal infections are similar. The clinic resembles ARVI, but after a while nausea and vomiting occurs, abdominal pain and profuse diarrhea appear. For young children, these infections are dangerous due to the rapid development of dehydration and the development of serious complications from the heart and lungs. In adults, the disease occurs without any symptoms, but is accompanied by the release of pathogens into the external environment. This condition is especially dangerous – an unsuspecting person becomes a constant source of viruses for others.
During the round table, the emphasis was placed on the key rules for the prevention of viral intestinal infections as part of sanitary and educational work among the population. This includes maintaining hand hygiene, using safe water, washing fruits and vegetables, especially when they are served raw, when swimming in open water, and not swallowing water.
