On 8 October 2024, psychologists of the University Zhakupbekova E.A. and Nuriden G.E. conducted an interactive lecture for the students of the 2nd year of EP ‘Medicine’ on the topic ‘Emotional intelligence’: the importance of self-awareness and interaction skills.
Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to understand, recognize and manage one’s own emotions and the emotions of others. In today’s world, where interaction with people is central to learning and work, EI is becoming one of the most important skills for successful communication and personal development.
- 1. Definition and Components of Emotional Intelligence – The lecturer detailed the four main components of EI: self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, and relationship management. Participants learnt how each of these components influences personal development and team interactions.
- Practical Application of EI in Medicine – In healthcare, emotional intelligence is particularly important because healthcare professionals interact directly with patients and their families. The ability to recognize the emotions of others and communicate effectively can significantly improve quality of care and therapeutic outcomes.
- Methods of developing emotional intelligence – the lecturer suggested various practical exercises and techniques that students can implement in their daily lives to improve their EI-skills. These included keeping an emotion diary, practicing active listening and learning stress management techniques.
The Emotional Intelligence interactive lecture proved to be not only useful but also inspiring. Understanding and developing EI can become an important tool in the professional activities of medical university students, helping them to further provide quality medical care and build effective relationships with colleagues and patients.
