Open class on “Kidney Diseases and Pregnancy”

Open class on “Kidney Diseases and Pregnancy”

On March 3, 2025, the Department of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology held an open class in a hybrid format using the Interprofessional Train methodology.

The session brought together fourth-year students (groups 4120, 4123), residents from Semey, Pavlodar, and Ust-Kamenogorsk specializing in nephrology, internal medicine, and pharmacology, as well as practicing internists from the oncology dispensary and Dr. Watson clinic, who are currently undergoing advanced training. The lecture focused on the highly relevant topic of kidney diseases and pregnancy.

Under the supervision of Associate Professor A. Sh. Kaskabayeva, three presentations were prepared by internal medicine residents:

  1. Anatomical and physiological features of the kidneys and urinary tract in pregnant women.
  2. Diagnostic methods for assessing kidney and urinary tract function during pregnancy.
  3. Preconception care and preparation.

Additionally, under the guidance of Associate Professor R. I. Alibekova, two students from group 4123, Akbota Maksat and Malika Kalelova, presented the following reports:

  1. Urinary tract infections and pregnancy: asymptomatic bacteriuria, cystitis, chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis of infectious origin, and urolithiasis.
  2. Gestational pyelonephritis.

Resident nephrologist Zhadira Aitmukasheva presented an interesting clinical case of a first-time pregnant patient with recurrent gestational pyelonephritis.

The session sparked great interest among students, residents, and physicians, leading to an engaging discussion on preconception care for young individuals.

At the conclusion of the session, practical recommendations were provided for the ongoing management of the pregnant patient.
