In the Republic of Kazakhstan, severe early toxicosis of pregnancy, especially in the form of hyperemesis, remains a pressing problem. It is accompanied by electrolyte imbalance, dehydration and vitamin deficiency, in particular thiamine (B1). Its deficiency can lead to a rare but dangerous complication – Wernicke’s encephalopathy. Given the increasing number of pregnancies against the background of chronic diseases and nutritional disorders, the relevance of early detection and prevention of encephalopathy increases.
On 04/09/2025, in order to raise awareness and prevent complications, assistants of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology named after A.A. Kozbagarov, B.A. Shamshina, G.M. Egezhanova, held a lecture for general practitioners and obstetricians-gynecologists, devoting it to the diagnosis and prevention of Wernicke’s encephalopathy in pregnant women. This condition requires urgent diagnosis and treatment, since delayed assistance may lead to severe neurological consequences, including disability and death. Classic symptoms (ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, confusion) often remain unrecognized, especially in conditions of limited access to diagnostics in the regions.
