Integrated interdisciplinary Olympiad “Infectious diseases in children and childhood diseases”

In honor of the 70th anniversary of Semey Medical University, on May 18, 2023, on the basis of the children’s infectious diseases department of the regional Center for Phthisiopulmonology and Infectious Diseases, an integrated interdisciplinary Olympiad “Infectious diseases in children and childhood diseases” was held among 4th-year students of the specialty “General Medicine”. Organizers of this event: employees of the Department of Children’s Infectious Diseases and the Department of Propaedeutic of Children’s Diseases. Four teams took part in the Olympiad: “Immunity” (group 4102), “Vita” (group 4109), “Fluorochrome” (group 4101) and the team “Cranial nerves” (434 group of foreign students).

The Olympiad was held in three languages and consisted of four stages: greeting, solving the case, putting on and removing personal protective equipment (PPE), a captains’ competition.

Jury members: Shalaganov Zh.F., doctor of the children’s diagnostic department, infectionist for children of the highest category; Mansurova A.A., assistant of the Department of Children’s Infectious Diseases, PhD, Dalelkanova T.D., assistant of the Department of Children’s Infectious Diseases; Muratova F.K. and Smagulova A.E. – assistants of the Department of Propaedeutics of Children’s Diseases. The host of the Olympiad Tugelbaeva A.M., assistant of the Department of Propaedeutics of Children’s diseases. Deputy deans of the School of Medicine Dyusenbayeva A.B. and Kulgimbayeva A.Sh. were invited to the Olympiad.

The head of the Department of Children’s Infectious Diseases Efendiyev I.M. and the head of the Department of Propaedeutics of Children’s Diseases Toktabayeva B.Zh. made a welcoming speech.

The first stage of the competition is “Greeting”, where each team showed their resourcefulness and creativity. When solving a case (situational problem), the participants of the Olympiad had to make a diagnosis and appoint an examination. The third practical stage is putting on and taking off the PPE: the team leaders demonstrated the speed, consistency and correctness of using the PPE. In the captains’ competition, the leaders of the four teams in turn had to answer 10 questions correctly within 1 minute.

According to the results of the Olympiad, the 1st place was taken by the team “Immunity” (group 4102), the 2nd place – the team “Vita” (group 4109),); the 3rd place – the teams “Fluorochrome” (group 4101) and “Cranial nerves” (434 group of foreign students).

The winners and prize-winners of the Olympiad were awarded diplomas, certificates of participants and memorable prizes.

The jury members spoke, noting that the Olympiad was held at a fairly high level. Deputy Dean of the School of Medicine Dyusenbayeva A.B. thanked the heads of both departments for the invitation, congratulated and praised all participants of this event.

In conclusion, the head of the Department of Children’s Infectious Diseases Efendiyev I.M. and the head of the Department of Propaedeutic of Children’s Diseases Toktabayeva B.Zh. congratulated the winners of the Olympiad and wished all participants success in further improving their knowledge and skills. Imdat Musayevich advised the participants of the Olympiad-4th-year students to enroll in an internship in the specialty “Pediatrics” in the future and then – in a residency in the specialties “Infectious diseases adults, children” and “Pediatrics”.
