In 2023, on December 12, a seminar on the prevention of meningococcal infection was held in the conference hall of the central station of the emergency medical service of the Abay region.
Interns of the 613th group of GPs, who are currently studying in the discipline “Infectious diseases in adults,” dwelled in detail on the diagnostic criteria for diagnosing meningococcal infection, taking into account clinical forms.
The speakers said that with meningococcal meningitis, the main signs will be a triad of symptoms: fever, headache, vomiting; positive meningeal symptoms (neck muscle rigidity and/or Kernig, Brudzinski symptoms (upper, middle, lower); impaired consciousness (with the development of cerebral edema).
In case of development of meningococcal meningoencephalitis: fever with chills; disturbance of consciousness (deep stupor, psychomotor agitation, often visual or auditory hallucinations); convulsions; damage to the cranial nerves, cortical disorders – mental disorders, partial or complete amnesia, visual and auditory hallucinations, euphoria or depression; persistent focal cerebral symptoms (paresis of facial muscles of the central type, pronounced anisoreflexia of tendon and periosteal reflexes, sharp pathological symptoms, spastic hemi- and paraparesis, less often – paralysis with hyper- or hypoesthesia, coordination disorders).
The tactics of a doctor and a medical worker in the emergency medical service in cases of suspected meningococcal infection and the issues of preventing this infection were analyzed in detail.
