During the first years of the institute’s formation, teaching of biochemistry, inorganic, analytical, organic, physical and colloidal chemistry was conducted at the Department of General Chemistry, which was organized in the year of the foundation of the Semipalatinsk Medical Institute – in 1953. Its first head was Alexander Mikhailovich Konovalov, a graduate of the Leningrad University. In 1959-60, the department was divided into the Department of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry (Head of the Department is Associate Professor Konovalov Alexander Mikhailovich) and the Department of Biochemistry with a course of organic, physical and colloidal chemistry (Head of the Department is Associate Professor Rusinova Kapitolina Ivanovna).
From 1963 to 1977, the newly organized Department of Biochemistry with a course in organic and physical and colloidal chemistry was headed by Professor Dolgova Zinaida Yakovlevna.
From 1977 to 2016, the Department of Biochemistry was headed by Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Tapbergenov Salavat Orazovich. Tapbergenov S.O. in 1965 he graduated with honors from the Medical Faculty of the Semipalatinsk Medical Institute and then postgraduate studies at the Department of Biochemistry of the Kharkov Medical Institute, after which he defended his PhD thesis in 1969. In 1984 he defended his doctoral thesis on the topic: “Functional and metabolic effects of thyroid hormones and catecholamines in the regulation of energy metabolism.”
From 1976 to 1984, the Department of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry was headed by Associate Professor Yesengulova Shaizada Kamzinovna. In connection with the change in the training programs, the teaching of the subject transformed from organic chemistry to bioorganic chemistry was transferred to the Department of General Chemistry, which from 1984 to 1995 was headed by Associate Professor Karatysh Boris Vladimirovich, and from 1995 to 2002, the Department of General Chemistry was again headed by Yesengulova Shayzada Kamzinovna.
In the nineties, the Department of Chemistry received the status of a course at the Department of Chemical Disciplines, which in 2002-2003 academic year. year was headed by associate professor Gavrilenko Irina Vladimirovna. In 2003, in connection with the opening of training in the specialty “Pharmacy”, the course of chemistry was divided into two independent courses “Course of General Chemistry” and “Course of Chemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy”. In September 2007, in connection with the optimization of the educational process, the courses of general chemistry and chemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy were combined into the course “Chemistry and drug technology”, which since March 1, 2007 was transformed into a department. Associate Professor Gavrilenko Irina Vladimirovna was appointed the head of the course, and later of the department. From 2008 to 2009, the Department of Chemistry was headed by Candidate of Chemical Sciences Bolysbekova Saltanat Manarbekovna.
In 2009, all chemical disciplines were merged into a single department – the Department of Biochemistry and Chemical Disciplines. Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Tapbergenov Salavat Orazovich was elected the head of the department. In the 2016-2017 academic year, the department was headed by candidate of chemical sciences, associate professor Bolysbekova Saltanat Manarbekovna. From September 2017 to June 30, 2022, the head of the Department of Biochemistry and Chemical Disciplines is Candidate of Medical Sciences, Professor of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences Smailova Zhanargul Kayyrgalievna.

The department continues to work on the study of the mechanisms of hormonal regulation of metabolic processes in extreme conditions and the consequences of nuclear explosions at the Semipalatinsk test site on the human and animal body on the topic: “Health status of the population living in the SNP area.” The main areas of research conducted at the department are: “Adreno-thyroid system in the regulation of bioenergetic mechanisms of the cell, immunity and processes of adaptation of the body to stress effects in the post-radiation period” and “Methods for restoring violations of adaptation mechanisms and enzymatic diagnosis of immunity disorders”, a grant from the Science Foundation of the Academy of Sciences RK. A doctoral dissertation and 2 candidate dissertations were defended on this topic. The department has a patent and a copyright certificate for an invention and 18 rationalization proposals. In May 2009, by the decision of the Presidium of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Russia, the Department of Biochemistry of the Semipalatinsk Medical University was awarded the honorary title “Golden Department of Russia” with the award of diploma No. 00438.
The department operates a biochemical department of the Joint Educational and Scientific Laboratory, equipped with modern equipment and instruments, such as automatic biochemical and hematological analyzers, an apparatus for protein electrophoresis and Geldok.
Innovative teaching and learning methods are actively used, such as TBL, integrated lectures and classes. More than 15 teaching aids, textbooks and monographs have been prepared and published.
All the years, the staff of the department take an active part in the public life of the institute and the academy, the city and the republic. Repeatedly members of the department were elected deputies of the city, district Council of People’s Deputies, elected to the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, worked in the dean’s office, organized and carried out a lot of work in the social and political movement “Nevada-Semipalatinsk” of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The department has scientific and friendly relations with the universities of Ukraine (Kharkiv, Kyiv), Belarus (Minsk, Grodno) and Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Volgograd), Poland.

Tapbergenov Salavat Orazovich – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, member of the European Academy of Natural Sciences, Honored Worker of Science and Education, Founder of the Scientific School. Born on June 22, 1941 in Alma-Ata. In 1965 he graduated from the medical faculty of the Semipalatinsk Medical Institute. In the period from 1966 to 1969 he studied at the graduate school in Kharkov. In 1983, at the Research Institute of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, he defended his doctoral dissertation in the specialty “Human and Animal Physiology”. Area of scientific and pedagogical activity: biochemistry, medical and clinical biochemistry. Tapbergenov S.O. biochemical methods for determining the activity of enzymes have been developed and put into practice: succinate dehydrogenase, AMP-deaminase, adenosine deaminase and monoamine oxidase, which are widely used in scientific research. The theoretical foundations for the formation of adaptive processes with the participation of the adreno-thyroid system have been developed. Academician Tapbergenov S.O. is the author of the first textbook in Kazakhstan “Medical Biochemistry” (Astana, 2001), used as a textbook in the Universities of Russia and the CIS countries. The author of the first textbook in the Kazakh language for students of medical universities “Medical Biochemistry”. In 2009, he was awarded the gold medal of V.I. Vernadsky. In 2010, at the competition at the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences “Golden Fund of National Science”, a guide for doctors S.O.
