The Department of General Surgery was established in 1955 on the basis of the Department of the Hospital of Art. Semipalatinsk with a multidisciplinary bed fund until 1997.
From 1997 to the present, the clinical base of the department is the surgical department of the emergency hospital in Semey.
Professor Alexander Yakovlevich Yasnogorodsky was appointed the first head of the department. In subsequent years, the department was headed by professors: K.Ch. Chuvakov, A.S. Idrisov, M.D. Arslanov, A.I. Baryshnikov, D.I. Darensky; associate professors: E.A. Abdrakhmanov, S.Sh. Sharipov, M.A. Kaldybaev.
1983 to 1995 the department was headed by the Honored Scientist of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Honored Inventor of the Russian Federation, Professor V.I. Nagibin.
From 1997 to 2018 the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Botabaev Serikzhan Isagalievich.
The course (department) of faculty surgery was organized in 1956. The first organizer and head of the department was Professor Alexander Yakovlevich Yasnogorodsky.
Over the years, the department was headed by Associate Professor M.A. Likhtentul, professor N.A. Telkov, doctor of medical sciences V.F. Didenko, associate professor T.A. Kazkenov.
From 1993 to 2006 the Department of Faculty Surgery was headed by a Doctor of Medical Sciences. Professor Zhaksybai Shaimardanovich Zhumadilov. The staff of the department worked: professor M.M. Gladinets, professor P.I. Kakenova, associate professor G. N. Abisheva, assistants: Ph.D. G. G. Vaskovsky, K. E. Berikkhanova, A. A. Kusainov, KD Akimzhanov, D.Zh Tazhibaev., Postgraduate student Deborshi Battachardzhi, clinical residents: I.P. Savchenko, K.T. Kazhykenov. Based on the results of scientific developments, two doctoral dissertations and more than 15 candidate dissertations of applicants-surgeons in the East Kazakhstan region and the city of Pavlodar were defended.
2007 to 2012 by competition, he was elected head of the department, associate professor M.M. Gladinets.
From 2012 to 2017, the staff of the department were part of the Department of Surgery and Traumatology, the head of the department was Zhanaspaev M.A.. The department was a methodological center for teaching in surgical disciplines in English: surgery and urology.
Since 2018, by competition, he has been elected head of the department, Ph.D. M.T. Kuderbayev.
Since 2018, the staff of the Department of Faculty Surgery has merged with the Department of General Surgery into a new Department of Surgical Disciplines under the leadership of Ph.D. Kuderbayev M.T.

The directions of scientific development of the department staff are focused on the problems of liver regeneration, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the hepatobiliary system, benign thyroid tumors, gastroduodenal bleeding and prevention of purulent surgical infection.
The staff of the department developed original methods of invagination pancreatojejunostomy with decompression of the Virungian duct during pancreatoduodenal resections, resection of the stomach in case of “difficult” ulcers of the duodenum with the imposition of direct gastroduodenoanastomosis, methods of treatment of the stump of the worm-shaped tifraln appendix of the periachitis single-row sutures in surgery of the esophagus, small and large intestine, many surgical instruments have been improved for abdominal operations.
In addition, the staff studied volemic disorders in gastrointestinal bleeding and acute surgical diseases of the abdominal organs.
The method of decompressive jejunostomy proposed by them is widely used in acute intestinal obstruction and peritonitis, which led to a significant decrease in postoperative mortality in the above pathologies.
The clinic was one of the first in Kazakhstan to introduce the method of mini-accessible operations using the Liga-7 instrument set, developed in the Russian Federation in the surgery of the gallbladder and extrahepatic biliary tract. More than 2000 operations have been performed. The methods of cholecystectomy and surgical instruments have been improved, which allow performing operations on the extrahepatic biliary tract with the imposition of biliodigestive anastomoses, the sphincter of Oddi, reconstructive operations for cicatricial strictures of hepatic choledochus.
The staff of the department carried out and are carrying out great medical and consultative assistance to the population of the Semey region. Modern methods of diagnostics and treatment of patients with acute surgical pathology of the abdominal organs and other surgical pathologies are being introduced.
The department also conducts distance classes with students.
The course of urology of the Semipalatinsk Medical Institute was founded in 1957.The first organizer and leader of the urology course was Associate Professor Aleksey Sergeevich Malkov from 1957 to 1959, a retired colonel, a participant in the Great Patriotic War.
