World Osteoporosis Day

World Osteoporosis Day

Every year on 20 October, World Osteoporosis Day is observed to raise global awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and related musculoskeletal diseases.

It is a unique opportunity where people around the world unite to draw attention to the dire consequences caused by osteoporosis and musculoskeletal diseases.

Osteoporosis (OP) is a progressive systemic skeletal disease characterised by decreased bone mass and impaired bone structure (microarchitectonics), leading to increased bone fragility and risk of fracture.

Despite the widespread prevalence of the disease, methods of prevention and treatment are rarely publicised by the media. Unfortunately, osteoporosis may not manifest itself until fractures occur. It is a sad fact that in recent years osteoporosis has become “younger”. Therefore, dissemination of knowledge about osteoporosis and its prevention measures is especially important at the moment. In order to apply the methodology “from resident to student” at the Department of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology together with the Department of Radiology resident radiologists and students of the 4th year of 4127 OM held a round table dedicated to the day of osteoporosis. Assistant of the Department of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology Kanapiyanova G.B. together with the resident radiologists of the 1st year of training Аmanbekova A.T., Isakova A. acquainted the students with the main clinical manifestations and diagnostic methods of osteoporosis, including the gold standard of osteoporosis diagnosis – dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.  The students had an opportunity to see the process and evaluation of this method of examination. Residents and students actively participated in the discussion, asked questions and were grateful to the chairs for organising this event.
